Finding Joy in Discipline?

Finding Joy in Discipline?

God’s Love

“Because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”Hebrews 12:6 (NIV)

We are reminded of the deep and abiding love that God has for His children.

His discipline and punishment are not acts of cruelty or anger, but rather expressions of His love and care for us.

Purpose

God’s discipline is not meant to harm us or make us feel small. Instead, it serves a greater purpose – to shape us, refine us, and help us grow into the people He has called us to be.

Just as a loving parent corrects a child, so too does God correct us, not out of anger, but out of a desire to see us reach our full potential.

Process

Discipline is often uncomfortable and even painful. It can be easy to resent it or to feel like we’re being punished for our mistakes.

However, if we can shift our perspective and see discipline as a sign of God’s love and care for us, we can begin to find joy in the process.

Growth

When we embrace discipline with humility and trust in God’s goodness, we open ourselves up to growth and transformation.

Discipline helps us to shed our selfish tendencies and develop character, patience, and wisdom. It refines us, like gold being purified in the fire, so that we can better reflect the image of Christ within us.

Do not despise the discipline of the Lord, but rather embrace it with gratitude, knowing that it is a sign of His deep and abiding love for you. Through discipline, you can find joy and hope in the process of becoming more like Christ.

Old Yeast

Old Yeast

“Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” (1 Corinthians 5:7)

Examining Our Hearts

During the Passover feast, God commanded His people to remove all leaven from their homes.

Yeast causes bread to rise, picturing how sin swells up and permeates our lives.

This yearly ritual reminded Israelites to examine their hearts and take sin seriously.

As believers in Jesus, we also must regularly inspect our lives and root out “old leaven” – attitudes and behaviors that displease God.

Christ’s sacrifice frees us from sin’s power, making us new creations. However, we still struggle with remnants of our old nature that lead us astray if left unchecked.

Pride, greed, lust, bitterness, and selfishness can puff us up like yeast if not confronted and confessed.

Getting rid of sinful leaven requires brutal honesty. We must ask God to reveal blind spots and things sabotaging our spiritual growth.

While painful, facing the truth positions our hearts to be purified and transformed by the Holy Spirit’s cleansing fire.

Removing sin restores the sweet fellowship with Jesus that yeast corrodes.

Crumbs of Compromise

It only takes a small amount of yeast to leaven an entire lump of dough. Similarly, “little” sins or compromises spread and damage our whole lives if tolerated.

Believers often excuse gossip, white lies, inappropriate media, anger, or addictions as harmless. But these behaviors grieving the Spirit, have profound consequences if left unchecked.

Rationalizing and downplaying sins gives the enemy footholds. As issues accumulate over time, we become desensitized until flagrant wickedness seems normal.

Yeast is insidious and penetrating. The only solution is to sincerely confess specific sins and turn away from them.

We must remove even small bits of leaven to remain unleavened bread.

Living holy requires vigilance. Regularly evaluating our lives identifies areas needing God’s cleansing fire.

Even after cleansing, we must guard our hearts since sin crouches at the door.

Staying unleavened means promptly repenting when we stumble. God uses our trials to reveal and refine away sinful impurities.

Becoming New

Christ sacrificed Himself as the ultimate Passover Lamb to free us from sin and death.

Now saved by grace, we have a new unleavened identity in Him. Our old selves died on the cross so that we might live free in the Spirit.

However, living into our new natures requires intentionally removing the old leaven of wickedness.

As we increasingly yield control to the Spirit, He empowers us to reject temptations and walk in holiness.

Staying unleavened is only possible through relying on Christ’s strength. Our part is submitting our wills completely to Him.

God is pleased when we actively participate in the process of sanctification. Regular self-examination and repentance keep our lives pure and unleavened for Jesus’ glory.

Search Me, O God

Search Me, O God

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24

In Psalm 139, David expresses awe at how intimately God knows us. The Lord scrutinizes our paths, our lying down, and our rising up. His hand is always upon us.

He discerns our thoughts from afar, knowing them fully before a word is on our tongue.

David says there is nowhere he could flee from God’s spirit and presence. Both height and depth are open before the Lord’s eyes.

Such omniscience could be terrifying – after all, nothing is hidden from God’s sight. But David does not find it oppressive.

Rather, he is comforted that God’s comprehensive knowledge of him is coupled with faithful love. The God who sees all is also the God who formed and knit us together in the womb.

Ask God to Search Your Hearts

Since God already sees all, David invites Him to keep searching deeply within.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart.”

Psalm 139:23

He welcomes the Lord’s examination because he knows it will lead to purity and restoration. Though God is fully aware of the contents of our hearts, He desires that we consciously open ourselves up to His refining work.

Asking God to search our hearts requires humility and courage.

Do we really want Him to dig up the sinful thoughts and motives we easily justify or ignore?

Are we ready to have Him chip away at prideful self-reliance and expose our deepest hurts and fears?

But the courageous prayer for God to search our hearts always results in blessings.

Offensive Ways

David specifically asks God to reveal any “offensive way” in him. The Hebrew word translated “offensive” connotes rebellion and wrongdoing.

These are the sins of both commission and omission – the wrong things we do as well as the good we fail to do.

When we harbor lies, nurse grudges, indulge in impurity, or operate out of selfish ambition, it grieves God’s Spirit. Defensive walls start rising up in our hearts, severing intimacy with Him.

But as the Lord graciously exposes the offensive ways in us, He extends mercy.

The wonder of the Cross is that Christ bore God’s wrath for our rebellion so we could be forgiven and cleansed.

When we confess and turn from offensive ways, the barriers separating us from God come tumbling down. Sweet fellowship with Him is restored.

The Way Everlasting

The fruit of God’s searching is “the way everlasting” – the path of righteousness that leads to eternal life.

As God excavates the offensive ways in us, He fills those empty spaces with more of His light and truth.

Sin’s stranglehold is broken; virtue and godliness take root. Our thoughts become more aligned with His thoughts; our desires are refined.

Walking in the way everlasting brings tremendous freedom and joy. The false selves we construct always end up enslaving us. But God wants to excavate our mess and shape our true identity as His beloved children.

Though the refining process can be painful, the destination of deeper intimacy with Christ makes it infinitely worthwhile.

Purifying Power of God’s Word

Purifying Power of God’s Word

“And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.” Psalm 12:6

God’s Word is described as flawless, containing no defects or imperfections. It has been thoroughly refined and purified, just as precious metals are heated to remove all impurities.

Scripture comes directly from the mouth of God, communicated through divinely inspired human authors.

Though the writers had different styles and personalities, God supernaturally guided the process so that His Word accurately conveyed exactly what He wanted to communicate.

The Bible claims about itself that it is “God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Holy Spirit moved upon the hearts and minds of the writers, enabling them to write God’s message to humankind.

The result is a collection of 66 books that form one unified, authoritative, and infallible message from our Creator to us.

There are no holes, no contradictions, and nothing false or misleading in Scripture. It is complete and inerrant in all it affirms.

Refining Power of Scripture

Just as fire refines and purifies metal, exposing and burning away impurities, so God’s Word refines and purifies our hearts and minds.

As we read, study, and mediate on the flawless truths of Scripture, it challenges wrong thinking, exposes sinful motives, and transforms us to be more like Christ.

The Bible cuts through rationalizations and denial, probing the deepest recesses of our hearts.

God’s Word has a living, active power that scrutinizes the thoughts and attitudes of our hearts (Hebrews 4:12).

Scripture confronts prideful self-reliance, washes away secret sins, and unveils hidden motives and agendas we keep even from ourselves.

Regular meditation on God’s flawless truth, roots out all that is impure and draws us closer to the mind and heart of Christ.

As we drink in its wisdom, Scripture gradually and gently sanctifies us, scrubbing away sins and replacing them with virtues pleasing to God. It peels back layer after layer of self-deception and worldly thinking.

Discerning Truth

We live in an age of confusion with no shortage of competing voices. But God’s Word stands above the noise as the standard of ultimate truth.

Through Scripture, God gives us a flawless filter to run everything through – how we think, how we live, what we believe.

Its unchanging truths enable us to discern truth from error, sifting out falsehoods that masquerade as wisdom.

Moral relativism tells us there is no absolute right or wrong. But the Bible makes clear there are moral absolutes rooted in God’s unchanging holy character.

When we steep our hearts and minds in God’s Word, it equips us to evaluate claims and philosophies against the plumb-line of God’s flawless revelation.

Anchor for the Soul

With its unwavering truths, God’s flawless Word provides a steadying anchor for our souls amid the shifting tides of culture.

Scripture gives us bearings to navigate life’s complexities and trials with wisdom, discernment, and confidence in God’s purpose and sovereignty.

Take comfort that His promises are sure – not one will fail. Just as refined gold emerges radiant and untarnished from the flames, those who build their lives on God’s Word will shine brightly for His glory.

Every Idle Word

Every Idle Word

Matthew 12:36But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.

Power of Words

Our words hold tremendous power, for good or evil.

Though we may dismiss gossip, lies, or hurtful speech as harmless, Jesus warns that each idle word has eternal implications.

A Mirror to the Heart

Christ sees our words as an overflow of the heart.

Toxic speech reveals inner decay that needs cleansed. Our tongue will testify either for or against us.

Choose Words Carefully

Since every careless word will be replayed on judgment day, we must allow God to guard our lips.

May love, grace and wisdom guide our speech – online and off.

The Fruit of Redemption

Believers transformed by the Spirit speak words of life, not death.

May your conversation reflect the gracious redemption we’ve received in Christ.

Ask God to Seal Your Lips

Lord, I confess that my words often do damage instead of good. Please purify my speech and restrain my tongue from gossip, lies, or tearing others down. Seal my lips unless what I say imparts grace, wisdom and kindness. Cleanse my heart so that my words will testify to Your redeeming work in my life.

A Consuming Fire

A Consuming Fire

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”

Hebrews 12:28

The writer of the Book of Hebrews also recalled the words of Moses from Deuteronomy 4:24

“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.”

It is true; God often manifests Himself in fire!

Recall when Moses met with God in the desert . . .

Exodus 13:21-22

“By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.  Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.”

Fire describes a characteristic of God, and it continues into the New Testament.

You may recall John the Baptist, who would become one of the greatest prophets of God that ever lived. Here is what he declared to the people who came to see him in the desert. . .

Matthew3:1-12

In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord,  make straight paths for him.’” John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?  Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.  And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.  The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

So there it is; our God is a God of fire . . . a consuming fire, and those who would come to Jesus, WILL BE BAPTIZED BY FIRE!

Biblical fire does three things; it provides light, purifies and consumes.

Light

God manifested Himself in a pillar of fire, so that the Israelites could see in the darkness. The fire of God, illuminates us, and reveals darkness. Jeremiah 23:29 declares to us . . .

“Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

The fire of God, His Word, searches our heart, revealing darkness and sin; it is His way of showing us where we need cleansing and help.

God does not reveal these things to make your life miserable; He is showing you why your life is miserable already, and He stands ready to apply the remedy!

Purification

Secondly, fire purifies. When bacteria gets into the water, the only sure way to cleanse it, is to bring the water to a boil, killing all the bacteria.

God’s word is like fire and when it reveals those dark places in us, it will purify us. Recall the often quoted Scripture in 1 John 1:9; we quote this passage when we recognize sin.

“If we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgives us our sin and purify us from all unrighteousness”

John the Baptist was speaking of this baptism of fire. Jesus reveals all of the rubbish in our heart that has been keeping us away, standing at a distance, if you will.

As He reveals this to us, we are now faced with a golden opportunity, one in which we agree with Him that it is truly rubbish, it is sin!

This revelation by Him to us and our agreement with HIM, that sets up this remarkable purification of the heart. The fire of God cleanses us. There is an old hymn I love . . .

The Crimson Wave

Oh, now I see the cleansing wave!
The fountain deep and wide;
Jesus, my Lord, mighty to save,
Points to His wounded side.

Refrain

The cleansing stream I see! I see!
I plunge, and oh, it cleanseth me!
Oh, praise the Lord! It cleanseth me!
It cleanseth me—yes, cleanseth me.

I rise to walk in Heav’n’s own light,
Above the world and sin,
With heart made pure and garments white,
And Christ enthroned within.

Refrain

I see the new creation rise;
I hear the speaking blood.
It speaks! Polluted nature dies!
Sinks ’neath the cleansing flood.

Refrain

Amazing grace! ’tis Heav’n below
To feel the blood applied,
And Jesus, only Jesus know,
My Jesus crucified.

Oh to be purified by the Baptism of Christ through Fire!

Judgment

Lastly, fire brings judgment. As John the Baptist declared earlier . . .

For those rejecting Christ’s offer of unconditional love, grace and mercy; the fire of God will consume them and they will be utterly lost forever; destined to an eternity of fire; a place prepared for the devil and his angels.

Revelation 20:11-15

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.  And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.  Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

So . . .  what will you do?

I heard someone once say; “God is a come as you are God, but not a stay as you are God”

If the Refiner of your soul is revealing anything that needs to be purified and cleansed, do not hesitate; allow Him the freedom to do the work only He can do!
