The Light Within

The health of our spiritual vision determines the overall quality of our lives.

Jesus offers a profound insight into human nature in Matthew 6:22:

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness.”

Matthew 6:22

This verse uses a simple analogy to convey a deep spiritual truth.

The Eye as a Spiritual Lens

Jesus uses the eye as a metaphor for our inner focus. Our eyes, in this context, represent our desires, priorities, and values. The health of our spiritual vision determines the overall quality of our lives.

  • A Single Focus: A “healthy” eye is one that is focused on God and His kingdom. This focus illuminates our entire being, guiding our actions and decisions.
  • Spiritual Blindness: Conversely, an “unhealthy” eye is preoccupied with worldly things, leading to spiritual darkness.

Living in the Light

To cultivate a “healthy” spiritual vision, we should:

  • Prioritize God: Seek to put God first in our lives.
  • Cultivate Gratitude: Focus on the blessings in our lives, rather than what we lack.
  • Serve Others: Living for others shifts our focus from ourselves.
  • Spend Time in Scripture: Nourish our souls with God’s Word.

Matthew 6:22 is a call to examine our hearts and priorities. By focusing on what truly matters, we can experience the fullness of life that comes from living in God’s light.
